This one confiscated from New Jersey prison, was made with a stainless steel spoon. The bowl of the spoon was filled with wax and wrapped with thread to make an improvised handle. The tip was then sharpened.(source)

This one was confiscated around 1984 from a workshop in Wolfenbüttel prison, Germany. It was crafted from legal contraband and fitted with a wooden grip. The plan could have been shooting one of the officers and escaping.(source)

Knives are obviously illegal to carry in the prison complex. However, this collection of knives and shivs were secured at Santa Fu prison in Hamburg Fuhlsbüttel, Germany. Among many of these self-designed weapons was a shiv disguised as a ball pen.(source)
